Flood plains

Flood plains throughout the three counties have deteriorated because of drainage, eutrophication, development and intensive farming. There are opportunities for restoration in several – Nene, Tove and Upper Ouse in Northamptonshire, Ouse in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, Flit Vale and Ivel Valley in Bedfordshire, and Welland Valley, our northern boundary, to be considered in partnership with neighbouring Wildlife Trusts.

Our first aim is to extend or link existing reserves in the floodplains, especially Flitwick Moor, Titchmarsh, Ditchford – Higham Ferrers – Wilson’s Pits, and Southfield Farm Marsh. The proposed Nene Special Protection Area and Nene Valley Regional Park may provide opportunities for habitat restoration in the near future.

In the Ouse valley in Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire, the Trust will work mainly via landowner advice and in partnership with local authorities and the Environment Agency, although there may also be opportunities to extend our Houghton Meadows reserve.
