History of the Trust
Today’s Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough was formed in 1994 from the three county Wildlife Trusts and the Peterborough Wildlife Group. It's history goes back much further though
The Trust began its work over 50 years ago when the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely Naturalists’ Trust was founded in 1956. The Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire Naturalist’s Trust started up three years later in 1960, followed by the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust in 1963.
The founders of these Trusts were keen amateur local naturalists who were concerned at the loss of wildlife they were seeing and wanted to do something about it. They were joined by academics and ecologists and gradually they started to employ professional staff.
Today over 60 staff work across the three counties, together with the trustees of the charity and many other dedicated volunteers working to protect our precious local wildlife and habitats. Our work for wildlife is only possible because of the voluntary support the Trust receives from its many members and supporters in the three counties.
