Cambourne Greenspaces

Cambourne is a new development between Cambridge and St Neots. The Wildlife Trust has been involved from the beginning to ensure that the existing wildlife habitats were protected and that many large areas of new habitat were created, giving residents a wonderful space to enjoy being outdoors, and a home for wildlife of all types.

The Trust moved its Cambridgeshire office to Cambourne in 2004 and now two Cambourne officers manage 80 hectares of land encompassing existing and newly established woodland, grassland, lakes and wetland.

Not only is the existing wildlife flourishing but many new species have colonised and will continue to do so as the site matures. There are several badger setts in the woods and hedgerows, and many of the ponds contain great crested newts. The woodlands are extremely rich in insect life with over 800 species having been recorded. Green and great spotted woodpeckers, turtledoves, bullfinches and skylarks all breed here, including a pair of mute swans.

As well as looking after the green spaces, the Cambourne officers organise events to involve the local community and help them understand their environment. They hold regular ‘Conservation Days’ on the first Sunday of each month, please see Events or get in touch with the Cambourne officers.
