Welcome to Bluebell Watch 2011
This spring the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough is celebrating beautiful bluebells!
During late April and early May woodlands spring into life and provide a great place to enjoy one of nature’s finest spectacles and one of our best loved native wildflowers - bluebells!
The peak flowering season and the number and intensity of the blooms varies from year to year depending on weather conditions. Get the latest on how the bluebells are looking on our updates page.
If you are unable to get out and see the bluebells then we have a number of other ways you can Help us save the Bluebells . We would also love you to share your experiences and memories of bluebells. See our sharing page for more information. You can also learn more about this amazing plant on our bluebell facts page.
Brian Eversham, our chief executive, says “Coming at the end of the toughest winter many of us can remember, this year’s Bluebell carpets promise to be even more spectacular than usual. This is one of the unique high points of nature in Britain - you can’t experience the same intensity of colour and fragrance anywhere else in the world.”
“Bluebell time coincides with the richest flush of local wildlife - masses of primroses and oxlips, golden celandines and the vibrant fresh green of new leaves everywhere, nesting birds singing at full volume, and bumblebees energetically foraging after months in hibernation. The countryside never looks as pristine and perfect as in Spring. Get out to a Wildlife Trust woodland near you, and enjoy it!”
“But climate change, and landscape degradation threatens all this. Your local Wildlife Trust needs your help to manage our woods for the future. If you’re not yet a member, please think about joining us this Spring. It’s your best way to ensure that woods brimming with Spring flowers are there for future generations to enjoy, as part of a Living Landscape..”
Some of the best places to appreciate the vivid colour and scent of this charismatic wildflower include Waresley and Gransden Wood, and Lady’s Wood, near Ramsey.
