Cambridge City Greenways Project
The Cambridge City Greenways Project aims to enhance wildlife habitats within the city of Cambridge through practical management work; raising the profile of the wildlife in the city and its value to the local community, and encouraging the local people to get involved. The project began in 1998 and is principally funded by Cambridge City Council.
Work focusses on four identified Greenways, as well as County and City Wildlife Sites within the City. Greenways are corridors of wildlife habitat leading into the City that are designated on the City Local Plan.
A key aspect of the project is to engage the local community with the environment through various means. One way this is achieved is through the Cambridge City Greenways Conservation Group, where local people volunteer their time to assist with the regular management of local sites. Local people are also encouraged to discover and enjoy the wild areas and species in Cambridge; attend illustrated wildlife talks and guided walks; participate in local surveys and wildlife events; and take part in pond dipping and moth trapping sessions.
As well as focusing on specific sites, more city-wide work is also undertaken including an amphibian and reptile survey in 2007, and more recently in 2008, a bumblebee survey.
The City Greenways Project officer also works closely with local landowners, to advise them on how best to manage their sites for wildlife, and the City Council community reserves officer whose work concentrates on the City’s Local Nature Reserves (LNRs), which the Cambridge City Greenways Conservation Group assists in the management of.
Volunteering opportunities
Are you looking for fun, fresh air and exercise? Do you have a spare day during the week? Would you like to help safeguard some of the areas most important wildlife habitats?
We could not complete our work without the help of volunteers; they help us put our management recommendations into action and local communities to kick start work. The Conservation Volunteer Team meets every Tuesday. We undertake a variety of tasks including grassland management, scrub clearing, pond construction and management, otter holt construction and hedge work.
Newcomers are always welcome. All we ask is for one day of your time. If you would like to join us please wear appropriate clothing and footwear (waterproofs, sunhat and sunscreen) and bring a packed lunch. We would recommend that you have an up to date tetanus jab. We provide all tools and safety equipment and training to use them.
If you're busy on a Tuesday, there are also the Cambridge midweek conservation volunteers who meet every Wednesday. They carry out similar work and surveys but cover all of Cambridgeshire. Transport is provided.
Habitat management work on Local Nature Reserves is undertaken in conjunction with Cambridge City Council. These work parties are co-lead with Ellis Selway, Community Reserves Officer.
