Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom and Claypits Nature Reserve
Get involved
Claypits Nature Reserve is open to the public at all times. The Trust asks that dogs are kept on a lead and that visitors keep to the paths for the protection of wildlife and for their own safety.
Renovations to the classroom will be completed in spring 2008 and a host of activities for children, families and community groups are planned for the year ahead. The different ways in which you can get involved are listed below. Further details of specific events can be found on our events database. Alternatively, get in touch with the centre manager for more information.
Youth and community groups can take part in guided walks and activities on the reserve, and talks or activity-based sessions on wildlife and conservation topics in other nearby venues. Youth leaders can choose from the topics in the School Visits Brochure, games and other activities with a wildlife theme. They can also help with the management of the reserve.
The Great Fen Wildlife Watch Group is holding its first meeting in April at the Countryside Classroom, for children who are interested in wildlife and the environment. We currently have three registered leaders for the group but if we can recruit more, we may be able to start a Greenwatch group for older children.
Wildlife Training Workshops give people the opportunity to learn more about different aspects of local wildlife to enjoy and understand the countryside better. Two workshops are being held at Ramsey Heights in 2008.
Wildlife Trust Ecology Groups are teams of volunteers covering clusters of nature reserves with similar habitats. Their main activity is fieldwork throughout the year, which requires natural history skills such as species identification, to monitor species and habitats and the way they are managed.
Volunteering at Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom includes helping to manage the reserve, carrying out survey work and assisting the centre staff with school and youth groups. Volunteers do not need to be experts as training will be given. Get in touch with Helen for details.
School membership - The Wildlife Trust offers a special programme for schools who wish to support our work and learn more about helping wildlife.
