A slice of wildlife is served at Warboys Green Weekend

Huntingdon Area Local Members Group spreads the word about wildlife conservation

Many of people turned up for the Warboys Green Weekend on the second weekend in June, to enjoy the Warboys Greener Living Fair, and an open day event and Pingle Wood and Cutting Nature Reserve. The latter organised by the Huntingdon Area Local Members Group of the Wildlife Trust.

The Fair was organised by a team of people who form the ‘Greener Futures’, local environmental group, with energy use as the main theme of the event. Advice was available from the Energy Saving Trust, the National Energy Foundation’s ‘Green Energy Machine’ - a van packed with inspiration, advice and technical expertise on domestic scale wind generation, solar heating and much more. An Ecohouse from “Shape East” came, providing an interactive display, a scaled down version of an energy efficient home. An environmental artist, Jane Thelwis, inspired the young at heart to make environmental sculpture of an ‘Insect Invasion’. There were many stalls by green groups from real nappies to green burials, including a Wildlife Trust stall, run by the Huntingdon Area Local Members Group.

Nearly a hundred visitors, including the owner of the wood and several families, enjoyed guided walks at the open day event on Sunday at Pingle Wood and Cutting Nature Reserve when Local Group Members escorted visitors on a tour, describing the history and management of the site. A number of plants such as lady’s bedstraw and spikes of the common spotted orchid were prominent. Management by cutting scrub growth and mowing the grassland to help conserve the meadow species is an ongoing and time-consuming task, and several people indicated to the warden that they wanted to get involved in looking after the site.

The Huntingdon Area Local Members Group wishes to thank the Armstrong family for permission to hold the open day, Christina Biggs for transporting people from Warboys to the reserve, and Andy and Janet Curtis for organising the whole weekend.
