Ely Group starts Wild Week with a win
Local Group chairman receives a trophy at Ely Apple Day
The newly formed Ely local members group of the Wildlife Trust marked the start of Wild Week with a stall at Ely Apple Day to promote the Wildlife Trust, the activities of the local group, and Ely Wildlife Watch. The stall was also awarded the Watergull Orchard Trophy for the stall best reflecting the theme of the day.
The Mayor of Ely presented the trophy to Clive Baker, the chairman of the local group, after the judges chose the stall because of the display, the quiz, which included questions about apples, and badge making with pictures of orchard wildlife.
During the day large numbers of people visited the stall to join in the quiz, make badges and ask about developments at Roswell Pits. At noon, Clive took a group on a wildlife walk in the cathedral precincts and was able to show them signs of spiders and other wildlife on the old walls, insects feeding on the nectar in the ivy flowers, and a number of birds feeding in the meadow and park.
Helen Moore, an education and community officer with the Wildlife Trust, said, “It was a good day. Lots of people came to look at the display and talk to the Ely group committee and Wildlife Watch leaders. Hopefully their enthusiasm and knowledge of local wildlife will encourage more people to attend their meetings and join the Wildlife Trust.”
