Big bug hunt in Bedfordshire
Meads Primary School pupils fundraise for wildlife
Children from Meads Primary School in Luton have raised a fantastic £470 for The Wildlife Trust by taking part in a Big Bug Hunt.
Enthusiastic pupils searched around the school playing field, and swept their nets through the long grass in the environmental area in search of bugs and minibeasts. Bug hunting in groups, the children shared the equipment and identification charts to record their findings. Hawthorn sheildbugs were identified despite being well camouflaged in the hawthorn hedgerow. Spiders, earwigs, woodlice and snails were also observed, including ladybirds and ladybird larvae on tree trunks and leaves. An extra activity to draw bugs and invent imaginative names for them was also organised by teachers at the school.
The children raised the money by getting their friends and families to sponsor them in taking part. This money will help to protect hedges and meadows, and provide habitats - especially for bugs.
