Construction company builds… a hedge!

Corporate supporters take part in team-building event

Staff at construction company Kier Eastern swapped bricks and mortar for twigs and brambles when they took part in a 'hedge laying' event for The Wildlife Trust at Cambourne on Monday 4 February.

A team of seven, including project managers, quantity surveyors and administration staff, spent the day wrestling with sharp, thorny bushes to help create a new hedgerow to attract nesting birds and small mammals. This is the first challenge Kier Eastern, part of the Kier Group, has undertaken for The Wildlife Trust since becoming corporate members in 2007

Corporate partnerships manager for The Wildlife Trust, Anna Bradnam, said: “Hedge laying is a traditional country practice. The work is done in the winter when the trees are dormant and involves trimming off most of the bushy growth, then partially cutting through the stems so they can be bent over and tied down with hazel or willow binders. It is back-breaking work and the result is quite a drastic change, but by springtime the trees should start to re-grow and within a couple of years form a dense hedgerow for nesting birds and small mammals.”

Director of Kier Eastern, Paul Greenly, said: “We are very happy to be working with The Wildlife Trust. This conservation project has provided us with the ideal opportunity to further help establish the area by encouraging birds and other wildlife to make the village their home. The Kier Group is strongly committed to its environmental policy and days like this help us to give something back to the environment, as well as emphasising how much we can achieve by working as a team.”

Anna Bradnam added: “The team from Kier Eastern worked really hard on the day and demonstrated that excellent team spirit can produce outstanding results that benefit wildlife and the people of Cambourne. We are really grateful for their support and look forward to working with them on future projects.”
