School children raise money for local wildlife
Successful spellathon fundraising activity held at Northamptonshire school
Children from Welton Primary School in Northamptonshire raised funds for The Wildlife Trust by being sponsored by their friends and families to take part in a Spellathon - a challenging spelling quiz.
The fantastic efforts of the children and families have raised a staggering £640, which will be put towards restoring and enhancing habitats for wildlife and people in the county.
As an incentive, all the children who took part were entered into a prize draw to Adopt a Species, with the lucky winner chosing to adopt a dormouse, which includes a certificate, a photograph and factsheet. Other children who raised over £20 received either a T Shirt or baseball cap.
Linda Marshall, The Wildlife Trust’s community fundraising officer visited Welton Primary School and inspired the children to help the charity. Linda explained how wildlife habitats have been lost and damaged in the last few decades and how The Wildlife Trust is working hard to improve our countryside.
Yvonne Watts, head teacher of Welton Primary School said, "Every year we choose a special charity to support. After speaking to pupils, it was clear that they really wanted to help the animals in our local area. As always, the generosity of our children and their families amazed us. Pupils greatly enjoyed the challenge of having an extra spelling test with difficult animal and environment related words. The staff were also very pleased with their endeavours, so a great result all round!”.
