Peterborough goes wild with summer wildlife events
Find out what's happened and what's going to happen, in Peterborough and beyond!
On Saturday 3 June, hundreds of local people turned out to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of Eye Green Local Nature Reserve as part of Wildlife Weeks (27 May - 18 June) and the Peterborough Green Festival. This old brick pit site, which had grown rich in wildlife, was opened by Major John Holdich in the summer of 1996.
Local people enjoyed nature trails, guided walks, games, arts and crafts, and glorious sunshine. Walks and displays included information about getting involved in the Trust, volunteering, the history of the reserve and the brickmaking industry, fishing at the reserve, wildlife and tackling climate change.
The event was attended by Stuart Jackson MP, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marion Todd and Director of Environmental and Community Services at Peterborough City Council, Trevor Gibson, who were among the speakers to to celebrate the Trust’s work with the support of the local community. Speeches were followed by the cutting of a huge cake baked by the local Eye baker, which fed almost all the people attending.
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Jane Smith and Ali Dawes, themselves both avid wildlife fans, broadcast the programme live from the reserve for two hours to link in with the BBC’s Springwatch programme and Breathing Places project. Local Radio station Hereward Radio’s Black Thunder Crew also came along for live bulletins to encourage a teenage audience along to the event. The result was a fantastically popular and successful event with a diverse audience of local people.
Later in June, as part of National Insect Week, the Wildlife Trust has teemed up with other partners to create a minibeast-friendly Peace Garden in Central Park on Tuesday 20 June. For Refugee Week, the Trust will be hosting a campfire story-telling event on Friday 23 June, where refugee communities can tell their fascinating stories under the stars.
A range of other events will be taking place on Local Nature Reserves across Peterborough for Local Nature Reserve Celebrations (15 - 30 July) including the 20th Birthday Party of Lattersey Local Nature Reserve and the CPBRC’s Wildlife Olympic Challenge being launched in Central Park on 29 July, with wildlife hunts, minibeast surveys, craft activities and more.
Please get in touch with Rachel Price or visit our events for details of these and other events taking place over the summer, in Peterborough as well as across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.
