Peterborough Go Wild Project keeps going
Funding helps Trust to continue to bring wildlife and communities together
Thousands of people in Peterborough have the opportunity to continue to enjoy and discover local wildlife, thanks to a developing partnership between Perkins and The Wildlife Trust.
The Go Wild Project was launched in 2006 to help give Peterborough's communities the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife on their doorsteps through community events, school visits and outreach work. The project is continuing for another year thanks to a £20,000 grant from Perkins.
Over the year The Wildlife Trust will host a series of events. For families and children there have been a number of events already, including discovering what lies beneath the surface of Peterborough’s ponds in Longthorpe and Stanground, a Wildlife Discovery Day at the Wildlife Haven, and a Minibeast Safari at Itter Park. Future events include half-term wildlife walks.
Schools are also getting out and about on their local sites. Over 150 local children from four different schools have already benefitted from a school visit and some schools are also beginning to develop wildlife areas in their own grounds with the help and support of the Trust.
The Go Wild project also brings communities together on Peterborough’s green spaces. Both the Peterborough Central Ward Senior Citizen’s Association and the Burton Street Mosque Senior Citizen’s Group visited Ramsey Heights Nature Reserve this summer. The Trust is working with other groups as part of the project to promote health, reduce isolation and increase cohesion and learning.
This autumn, The Wildlife Trust is working to set up more ways for local people can get involved. For adults the Trust is setting up a Local Members’ Group in Peterborough. A series of walks and meetings will launch the new Local Group to further the Trust’s aims across Peterborough.
