Take a walk on the wild side
Funding improves wildlife habitats for people and wildlife
The Wildlife Trust is celebrating the success of its Cambourne Wild Discovery Project, which has opened up the wilder side of the village to residents and visitors, and wildlife!
The project has enabled the Trust to create excellent wildlife habitats from areas in the new development, through management works such as mowing, and tree, hedge and pond maintenance. This, in turn, has provided habitats for many threatened species, including the water vole and the skylark.
Part of the project was to involve the local community: Volunteers and staff from local companies have taken part in regular work parties, and local school children took part in a competition to design pictures for the signs marking the new Cambourne Wild Discovery Trail - a self-guided trail enabling people to learn about and enjoy their local wildlife in Cambourne.
The project was completed thanks to £10,000 of funding from the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG), administered and distributed by Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), and additional funding from Cambourne Consortium, Cambourne Business Park, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridge Water Company, Malcolms Estate Agent, The Cambourne Crier and the Trustees of the Audrey Martin Will Trust, administered by Hewitsons. Sarah Gosling, WREN project manager for Cambridgeshire, visited Cambourne Nature Reserve on Thursday 31 July to see the achievements of the project.
