Creatures of the night
Come and see the nocturnal animals that live at local woods
On Friday 22 September, Trust staff and volunteers will guide you through Gamlingay Wood after dark, listening and looking for some of the secretive nocturnal animals which inhabit the wood. Moth traps will be set up giving good views of food for bats in the wood. This includes barbastelle bats, which have only recently been recorded in this part of Cambridgeshire.
Helen Moore, community officer for the Wildlife Trust’s Woodland Linkage Project explained ”We are aiming to get visitors to find out what an exciting and interesting place the wood is after dark. We shall be using bat detectors to listen out for bats, hunting amongst the trees and use tiny torches to look for invertebrates in the undergrowth, as well as seeing moths".
All are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear warm waterproof clothes and stout footwear, and bring a torch if possible as some of the paths are uneven and muddy. Visitors are asked to make a donation of £1.50 per person towards the work of the Wildlife Trust. Numbers are limited so places must be booked in advance by e-mail helen.moore@wildlifebcnp.org or phone on 01353 664745.
