Woodland art

Local school children to celebrate the beauty of ancient woodlands

Art work to be produced by local school children as part of the Woodland Art Big Draw Event, will be on display for the first time in Gamlingay Wood on Sunday 15 October between 11am and 3.30pm. This event is part of the national Big Draw, which sees the Trust joining forces with a local artist and three Cambridgeshire schools to celebrate the beauty of ancient woodland.

Judith Lemon, community officer with the Wildlife Trust’s Woodland Linkage Project said, “Autumn is a good time to visit the wood and be inspired by the shapes, colours and textures. At the Woodland Art Big Draw Event, visitors will have the opportunity to look at the wood from different viewpoints and try out a variety of ways of recording their impressions”. Aidan Matthews, reserves officer for the project added, “Visitors to the wood will also be able to help turn Sugley Wood, which was an arable field five years ago, into a wood by collecting tree seed to grow in a tree nursery and then plant out in two or three years time.”

The artist will work in the wood with the school children using light and shade, texture and shape as a basis for their art work. These themes will be further developed at school. The art work produced will be incorporated into large panels which will be displayed in the Wildlife Trust Office at Cambourne, local libraries and the schools involved in the project during the next few months.

The Wildlife Trust’s Woodland Linkage Project is striving to link Gamlingay Wood to Waresley and Gransden Woods. This is the first phase of the plan for a South Cambridgeshire Forest for wildlife and people.

There is no charge for the Woodland Art event but donations for the work of the Trust will be gratefully received.
