Really Wild summer at Lings

Local children go on safari at their local nature reserve

A Really Wild Summer Holiday event was held on Wednesday 30 August for children on their school holidays. Children from neighbouring estates and the surrounding area were invited on a wildlife safari in the ancient woodland.

Wildlife Trust volunteer, Daniel White, taught the intrepid explorers long lost tracking skills. The youngsters were bursting with excitement upon identifying the tracks and signs of rabbits, moles, muntjac deer, foxes, dogs, and even a badger print. They were also rewarded with close-up views of a hedgehog, a shrew and frogs.

The safari then took them to the log-rolling and meadow areas where Wildlife Watch officer, Cheryl Roberts, led discoveries of woodland and grassland minibeasts. Having honed their observation skills the young adventurers were soon captured by the minute, fascinating world of insects.

The success of this event was heightened when a small group of children initiated a litter pick-up around the site of their favourite tree-house, asking Trust staff to give them a hand. Their positive response fuelled wider hopes to increase community involvement in maintaining the local woodland environment.

Look out for future Really Wild seasonal events during the next school holidays.
