New Environmental Education Centre arrives at Paxton
A new environmental education centre for Paxton Pits Nature Reserve arrived in style, on the back of a huge lorry. The building, which will be in a similar style to the current visitors centre, was delivered to the reserve after being built off site by Pinelog in Derbyshire.
The work is being funded by Natural England through Defra’s Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, and is a project between Huntingdonshire District Council, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough, the Friends of Paxton Pits and Cambridgeshire Horizons.
The building comprises a classroom, office and toilets and has been designed with some environmental features including a wood burning stove and a green sedum roof. The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough will run their Paxton Pits education programme from the new education centre and they will also be working with Huntingdonshire District Council to start up a Little Bugs Club for pre-school children, a Greenwatch group for 12 – 18 year olds as well as adult learning workshops and health walks.
Debbie Mckenzie, Huntingdonshire environmental education service manager for the Wildlife Trust said “We’re thrilled the classroom is finally here. It’ll be easier for us to deliver our great educational programme and it’ll act as a base for staff too”.
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough is working in partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council and The Friends of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.
