Fragile fen woodland to be protected
Woodland in the fens is now something of a rarity but a new £25,543.14 project will help to protect two of the remaining wet woodlands in Cambridgeshire, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire and Peterborough announced today.
The Wonderful Wet Woodlands of Cambridgeshire project, funded by Biffaward, will protect wildlife at Fordham Woods and Fulbourn Fen.
Deputy Reserves Manager Mark Ricketts said: “Wet woodlands like Fordham Woods and Fulbourn Fen are now quite rare in Cambridgeshire so we need to actively manage and protect them.
“At Fordham Woods, we will be undertaking management work to maintain the wet woodland, including removing invasive sycamores, mowing paths and cutting reedbeds. Visitors will also benefit from a new boardwalk, Welcome Board and information leaflet.
“At Fulbourn Fen, we will be using boundary ditches and the sluice gate to control water levels. We expect the work to take about 18 months.”
The project was launched with a guided walk around Fordham Woods.
Deputy Reserves Manager Mark Ricketts said: “Special features of the Fordham Woods nature reserve include the scarce dark-leaved willow and marsh loving flowers such as the attractive yellow iris and marsh-marigold. It is also good for birds such as marsh tits, woodpeckers and treecreepers.”
