Bedfordshire students compete for Volunteer of the Year
On Saturday 20 January, students from Pathways travelled to New Hall, University of Cambridge, to compete in the regional finals of the Millennium Volunteer of the Year 2006 celebration. Pathways is a course run by Dunstable College for adults with some learning difficulties and interested in grounds management and horticulture.
The students, who work at Randall’s Farm Environmental Educational Centre every Monday, had been chosen to represent Luton and Bedfordshire in the Team Award. This award "recognised the achievements of a team of Millennium Volunteers who have come together for the benefit of their community and the personal development of members of that team". The students did not get through to the national finals but received medals and certificates for representing their region.
Victoria Kinnear, Roy Hedges, Harry Refsum, Lewis White and Shane Billington, with their tutors Jill Davies and Corinne Heath, have been working at Randall’s Farm since September, but past students from Pathways have worked at the centre for the last three years. They carry out all kinds of ground maintenance work such as keeping hedgerows and trees pruned, making willow hides and fences, brook and pond clearing and general maintenance of sensory and vegetable gardens. They are the only maintenance workers that this conservation site has and their hard work is deeply appreciated by the staff on site.
