Children enjoy searching for minibeasts at Stibbington

Staff from the company who funded the new pond dipping platform join in the fun

Staff from Peterborough Power Station visited Stibbington Nature Reserve to see local school children explore wildlife using a new pond dipping platform that was built with thanks to a donation from the company.

Centrica, who run Peterborough Power Station, provided the vital funding allowing the Wildlife Trust to build new wooden platform to allow school children to enjoy pond-dipping, where they can learn about what lives in the water by catching their own aquatic minibeasts. Centrica has also funded resurfacing of paths to enable safe and inclusive access for all visitors.

Shirley Nott of Peterborough Power Station said, “It's fantastic to see what a difference our donation has made - the children were so excited about the smallest of creatures they found in the pond!". Rachel Price, community wildlife officer for the Wildlife Trust said, "The Trust is delighted that a local business has been able to make such a huge difference to the reserve. We are now able to provide safe and inclusive access for all school children, all year round."

Stibbington Nature Reserve is a wonderful place for wildlife on the outskirts of Peterborough, and a source of inspiration to school children. The combination of meadows, willows, reeds and lakes is not only picturesque, but also ensures that the site provides a valuable educational resource for the hundreds of school children who visit the reserve each year. The lake supports an exciting variety of wildlife both above and below the water surface, including rare otters, kingfishers and the scarce reed-beetle.

A visitor permit is usually required to visit Stibbington nature reserve, but the Trust runs guided walks, family fun days, volunteer work parties and training workshops, enabling hundreds of people to enjoy this reserve and many others in the area.

The Wildlife Trust receives help from a number of different companies across Cambridgeshire. If you would like to find out more, please contact Emma on 01954 713555 or email emma.pollard (at) wildlifebcnp.org.
