Hundreds snap up a free nest box!
New homes for garden birdlife given away at Corby supermarket
The Wildlife Trust and BBC Radio Northamptonshire gave away 200 free sparrow sized nest boxes at Asda in Corby on Saturday 17 February. Everyone was asked to register the box with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and send regular updates on any bird activity.
Nest Box Challenge is a new initiative undertaken in conjunction with the BBC’s Breathing Places campaign as part of National Nest Box Week between 14 - 21 February, aiming to encourage as many people as possible to put up nest boxes to help breeding birds and other wildlife.
Gardens play an extremely important role in supporting British birds by providing food, shelter and nesting sites. Gardens are also amongst the most intensively watched habitats in the country. Many birds are starting to look for a home so now’s the time to put up a box in your garden. Natural nest sites, such as hollow trees or cavities of old buildings are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and older properties renovated. It is estimated two million baby birds are reared in nest boxes each year. All boxes should be positioned safely away from predators and the extremes of weather.
