Severe sheep attack at Northamptonshire nature reserve
Eight sheep are attacked at Twywell Hills and Dales, two die
Following a spate of dog attacks on sheep at Twywell Hills and Dales Nature Reserve, during November 2006, more sheep have been savagely attacked. Eight sheep were attacked resulting in two sheep having to be put down, and the others having serious injuries to their legs and necks, causing heavy blood loss.
Cathy Wainwright, grazing manager for the Wildlife Trust, was met with a horrific scene as she checked the sheep at the reserve. The sheep were grazing in the central meadow area of the reserve; another flock has recently been introduced into the gullet area. The Wildlife Trust are becoming increasingly concerned over the immense stress caused to livestock and the costs incurred by vet bills.
Cathy said, "Introducing livestock onto publicly accessible reserves was always going to be a sensitive issue, but essential to maintain the green space. People enjoy seeing the rare breed sheep at the reserve and enjoy having the opportunity to get close to both livestock and wildlife. Providing good information prior to the animals arriving on site, and whilst they are present, as well as ensuring there are alternative areas for people to enjoy are key to resolving potential conflict. Our policy remains that dogs are allowed on leads on our reserves. We are investigating other ways of protecting livestock and will continue to work with local people to educate visitors to abide by the rules of the countryside".
The Wildlife Trust are keen for any information regarding the attacks and would like anyone with information to contact them on 01604 405285.
The Trust are not able to keep a constant watch on livestock, which is why help from volunteer shepherds is essential. If you would like to help as a volunteer shepherd, please call the above number or e-mail cathy.wainwright (at) wildlifebcnp.org.
