Former Prime Minister visits Great Fen Project area
Two local MPs accompany the former PM
Former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, visited the Great Fen Project in Cambridgeshire on Friday 21 October, in his role as Patron.
He was joined by the MP for North-west Cambridgeshire, Shailesh Vara, and John Gummer, MP for Suffolk Coastal, who is involved with the Project.
The Great Fen Project is an internationally important habitat restoration scheme, aiming to recreate 37 square kilometres of wetland between Peterborough and Huntingdon by reconnecting Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen National Nature Reserves. This project will create a haven for both wildlife and people, and will also provide a flood storage area, protecting the surrounding land.
Sir John accepted the role of Patron in early 2005. Great Fen Campaign Manager, Jane Cabutti said, “We are delighted that Sir John was able to accept this role. With his knowledge of the local area, we feel he will be invaluable in helping us to further the Project”.
The Great Fen Project is a partnership between English Nature, the local Wildlife Trust, Huntingdonshire District Council and the Environment Agency. For more information email info@greatfen.org.uk
