‘Bug Hunting’ in Bedfordshire
Local School children raise funds for Folly Wood appeal
Greenfield Lower School have raised over £800 to help the Wildlife Trust buy Folly Wood, by holding a special fundraising event.
The children, in years 3 & 4, walked to Flitwick Moor, a local Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and hunted for bugs. Armed with pots, identification charts and nets the children rolled logs, searched under leaves and identified the insects and made a note on their ID record sheet. Many of the children had asked family and friends to help them raise money for The Folly Wood Appeal for being brave enough to take part in the bug hunt. Some of the younger children hunted for bugs in the school grounds.
One member of staff said “Greenfield is an Eco-friendly School and has achieved the Green Flag Award. We are committed to protecting the environment for future generations and saw this as an opportunity for the children to become involved in an important local issue.”
Linda Marshall, the community fundraising officer, visited Greenfield Lower School and gave the staff and pupils a special presentation about the area, which is very close to the school. The teachers regularly take the children on visits to learn more about nature and wildlife.
