Green Watch Leaders
Location: Lings Environmental Centre, Northampton
Commitment: One meeting per month, plus planning time
Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of the Wildlife Trust, and is one of the UK’s leading environmental clubs for young environmentalists. Children aged between 8 - 12 can take part in wildlife projects by getting involved with Wildlife Watch Groups. There are 12 Wildlife Watch groups across our area. Watch groups are run by two fully registered Wildlife Watch Leaders and one helper.
Green Watch groups are for young people over the age of 12 and currently there is one other Green Watch group in the region, based at Randalls Farm in Bedfordshire. The Wildlife Trust recently received funding to set up a Green Watch group at Lings Environmental Centre, Northampton. We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to register as leaders for this group. Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for:
- Delivering an exciting and inspiring programme of Green Watch meetings for young people in your area
- Helping young people to explore their surroundings and to take part in practical conservation activities
- Recruiting young people to your local group and organising a programme of activities
- Running safe and enjoyable meetings, ensuring child welfare and safety policies are put into practice
- Promoting Watch membership and liaising regularly with the local Wildlife Watch officer
If you have an interest and enthusiasm for wildlife and working with young people, this opportunity could be for you. We are looking for volunteers who have a sense of responsibility and discipline, strong communication skills, sound judgement, and a mature, pragmatic and flexible approach. Some knowledge of local wildlife, practical conservation issues and tool use is desirable. You will receive training and gain skills in child protection, tool use, first aid, youth work, educational programming, project management and other topics as needed.
